LUFKIN — Madisonville used defense to reach the third round of the postseason.
The Lady Mustangs forced turnovers throughout the night en route to a 47-34 victory against Brownsboro in a Class 3A area girls basketball playoff Thursday night at Angelina College.
No. 16 Madisonville (24-9) advances to meet Mexia next week. Brownsboro completed the season 24-8.
“Defense was the key,” Lady Mustangs coach Shana Taylor said. “The kids came through putting pressure on the ball. That’s how we play.”
Lisa Nealey scored 17 points and Alexis Harris added 11 for Madisonville, which outscored Brownsboro 28-14 in the second half after going into the break down by one. The Lady Mustangs led 30-23 after three quarters and increased the advantage to double figures on a basket by Nealey with 1:10 left in the game.
LaQuesha Cooper scored 11 points and Rebekah Rogers added nine to pace Brownsboro.
“I’m proud of my kids in how hard we tried,” Bearettes coach Fred Griffin said. “We had a good season. I’m happy with the kids.”
The teams went back and forth in the first half, which ended with Brownsboro clinging onto a 20-19 advantage. The Lady Mustangs led 18-13 with just over three minutes remaining in the second quarter, but the Bearettes closed the half with an 8-2 run to pull ahead by one.
Madisonville controlled the second half, however, moving in front for good early in third. The Lady Mustangs outscored Brownsboro 11-4 in the third before pulling away in the fourth.
