MOUNT PLEASANT — John Tyler opens the 2014 football season at home next week against Plano.
But first, the Lions head to Mount Pleasant for a scrimmage today against the Tigers.
The varsity scrimmage is set for 7:30 p.m. at Sam Parker Field. Freshmen and JV squads scrimmage at 6 p.m.
"I think the main thing about this is just going against somebody else, getting a feel for another team and being able to adjust to another team's speed and tactics," JT coach Ricklan Holmes said.
"It's always exciting to go against someone else and get a different competitive feel versus going against yourself every day."
The scrimmage will follow a format familiar to a Lions squad that returns 16 starters as it's the same as the one utilized last year against Longview.
The teams will start out going first-team defense against first-team offense for 15 plays each followed by 15 plays for each of the second teams. Then the first teams will return to the field for 10 more plays.
After that, the two teams will play two 15-minute halves of a live format.
Last year JT quarterback Geovari McCollister used the scrimmage as a springboard for a standout junior campaign. He completed 17 of 25 passes for 193 yards and two scores and led the team in rushing against the Lobos.
Against Mount Pleasant today, Holmes said he's not looking at any one player or position in particular.
"Everybody has something to prove, everybody has something to work on," Holmes said. "We've got a strong offense, but they've still got to get better and so far they have. (On defense) we just got to make sure that they continue to do everything that they've done well this summer, in the spring and during the offseason."
