Tyler Lee vs. Marshall

Tyler Lee’s Jamar Arceneaux (24) carries the ball against Marshall on Friday at Maverick Stadium.

MARSHALL — What started as Friday night lights eventually turned into Saturday morning lights.

Well, just long enough for the Tyler Lee Red Raiders to line up in the victory formation and put the finishing touches on a 27-20 victory over Marshall at Maverick Field.

After a nearly two-hour weather delay, the Red Raiders and Mavericks finally kicked off at 9:27 p.m.

Ready to get their season started, the Red Raiders wasted no time getting into the end zone once the game began. Jamarion Miller took the fourth play from scrimmage 50 yards to the end zone, and after the extra point by Mason Magers, Lee led 7-0 with 10:18 left in the first quarter.

On the next drive, Marshall fumbled on the second play, and Josh Olivares recovered at the Marshall 22-yard line. The Red Raiders turned it into a 1-yard touchdown run by Mark Patton to take a 14-0 lead exactly four minutes into the contest.

The duo of Miller and Patton gave Marshall problems on the ground all night. Miller ran for 143 yards on 20 carries, and Patton carried the ball 17 times for 108 yards. The Red Raiders finished with 326 yards on the ground as a team behind an offensive line with four new starters.

Later in the first quarter, Elliott Davison picked off Jacarrion Green in Marshall territory.

The Red Raiders were stopped on fourth down at the Marshall 16. A 50-yard completion from Green to Demarcus Williams set up a 6-yard touchdown pass from Green to Lyrik Rawls on a broken play to put the Mavericks on the board with 8:44 left in the half.

On the ensuing drive, Rawls made his mark on defense with an interception of Trent Adams deep in Marshall territory.

Lee led 14-7 at the break.

On the first play of the second half, Green fumbled, and Chris Harris recovered for the Red Raiders at the Marshall 27. The Red Raiders ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Jamal Ligon to go up 21-7.

The Mavericks quickly moved the ball back down the field, but Lee picked off Green in the end zone.

Later in the third quarter, Marshall trimmed into the Lee lead with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Green to Arkansas commit Savion Williams. Green avoided several sacks on the play before delivering the ball to Williams. The extra point was no good to make the score 21-13.

Lee extended its lead early in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard run from Patton. The Red Raiders then missed the point after to put the score at 27-13.

Green and Williams connected for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 6:48 remaining to cut the score to 27-20.

The Red Raiders burned more than four minutes off the clock and moved the ball into Marshall territory, but were stopped on fourth down. The Mavericks took over on their own 13 with 2:21 to play. On fourth-and-5, a snap over Green’s head sent the quarterback scrambling. Green eventually threw the ball out of bounds incomplete to give the ball back to Lee as the clock struck midnight.

Patton took three knees to give the Red Raiders the victory.

The Red Raiders attempted just two passes in the second half — both completions for one yard.

Green was 16 of 26 for 234 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Savion Williams caught eight passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns, and Demarcus Williams had two grabs for 79 yards.

The Lee defense, which was flying around the football all night, held Marshall to 25 yards and no first downs in the first quarter. The Red Raiders forced four turnovers in the contest.

Lee (1-0) will take on rival John Tyler on Sept. 7 at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
