Rebekah Bowden served up the perfect start for Robert E. Lee, and the Lady Raiders used that momentum to sweep rival John Tyler 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 on Tuesday night at the Lions Den.

Bowden served during a 14-0 run to give Lee (13-5) an 18-5 lead in Game 1. The senior finished with a game-high seven aces to go with seven kills and three blocks.

“I tell them to keep the momentum when we have it and that’s what they did,” Lady Raiders coach Melissa Lee said.

Claire Himes led REL with eight kills while Nicole Trpkosh and Genesis Borens supplied 11 assists each. Jamesha Hutton added 10 digs.

DeDe Rouge led JT (8-13) with 17 assists while Kashanti Flowers tallied a game-high 10 kills.

Though Bowden had the Lady Raiders ahead early, the Lady Lions didn’t back down, challenging their cross-town foe in the final two frames.

JT used a 7-2 run to pull within 24-23 in Game 2 before Lee closed out the win. Game 3 was tight until Lee scored 10 of the final 13 points to finish the sweep.

“I’m friends with the coach so it’s a friendly rivalry for us,” Lee said of playing JT. “I think they’re doing some good things. They have a couple of hurt players right now.”

Before the Lee-JT match, both squads played Quitman at the Lions Den.

The Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 17 in Class 2A, swept John Tyler 25-21, 25-14, 25-22 in the first match of the day.

The middle match went the distance, with Lee winning 22-25, 25-16, 16-25, 25-18, 15-10 behind 31 digs from Taylor Winchester.

Lee and Quitman will both return to action Friday in the White Oak tournament while John Tyler hosts Marshall on Friday.
