ARP — Kyle Copeland’s five rushing touchdowns powered Arp to a 46-28 victory over Frankston on Friday night to begin District 9-2A Division II action at Bill Herrington Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers rushed for 362 yards in front of the homecoming crowd. Copeland picked up 52 of his 138 yards rushing on the second play of the game for the first score of the contest.
Both teams traded punts through the rest of the quarter with Arp holding a six-point lead in the second quarter. The Tigers took possession late in the first quarter and began a 10-play drive. Copeland ended that drive with a 1-yard score to give the Tigers a 13-0 lead.
Frankston found its footing on offense and scored on the following possession. Treston Coleman scored on the eighth play of the drive from two yards out to put the Indians on the scoreboard.
Copeland and the Tigers responded with another touchdown. Kasey McClendon took the first play 55 yards for the Arp score.
The Tigers forced an interception on Frankston’s next drive, and Copeland made it count with an 8-yard touchdown run with just over a minute to play in the half.
Frankston received the ball to begin the second half and kept themselves in the game with a four-play drive. Coleman took the first play of the half 54 yards to the Tigers’ 7. He finished the drive on an 11-yard run.
Arp (4-2) responded once again to extend its lead to 32-14. Copeland scored for the third time, this one coming from five yards out.
Frankston refused to go away and scored again on the following possession. Michael Warren carried the Indians inside the 5 with runs of 18 and 22 yards. Coleman ended the drive with a 3-yard score on a direct snap.
The scoring frenzy continued with the Tigers scoring their sixth touchdown of the game. Copeland took in his fifth score on a 9-yard carry.
Frankston failed to convert on a fourth-and-6 from the Tigers’ 41, but recovered a fumble on Arp’s next play. Warren made the Tigers pay with a 36-yard touchdown to make the score 38-28.
Arp put the game away later in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard run by McClendon. Frankston tossed an interception on the next drive, and the Tigers were able to run out the final five minutes to take the victory.
McClendon led the Tigers with 140 yards on 16 carries. Copeland carried the ball 15 times for 138 yards. He also completed four passes for 80 yards.
Frankston (1-5) was led on the ground by Warren who recorded 146 yards on 15 carries. Coleman followed with 22 carries and 128 yards.
