BROWNSBORO — Top-ranked Chapel Hill didn’t have it all figured out Friday night against Brownsboro, but eventually pulled away for the comfortable win.
Senior quarterback Anthony Kincade passed for 273 yards and three touchdowns, and the Bulldogs broke open a close game at halftime to defeat Brownsboro 49-21 at Bear Stadium.
Kincade completed 15 of 18 attempts for Chapel Hill (8-0, 2-0 in District 17-3A), and his three scoring strikes went to three different receivers.
Nelson Onwuzu led the receiving corps with seven catches for 142 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown. Avery Henderson and Deaveron Dean hauled in TD receptions in the first half.
Rex Rollins led the Chapel Hill ground game with 150 yards and a score on 15 attempts.
Brownsboro (0-8, 0-2), which only trailed 20-14 at halftime, was led offensively by quarterbacks Shelby Rogers and Bret Conner. Rogers passed for 233 yards and a touchdown, while Conner threw for 81 yards after entering the game in the fourth quarter.
Up by just six points to start the second half, the Bulldogs dominated the third quarter, building a 35-14 lead on a Joseph Clark touchdown run, Tyler Brown field goal and Rollins’ 25-yard scoring run.
Brownsboro netted just one first down in the third quarter.
The first half started like most of the previous seven weeks for Chapel Hill with the Bulldogs scoring on their opening possession. The five-play, 63-yard drive was capped by Kincade’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Dean with 6:41 remaining in the first quarter.
Chapel Hill fumbled on its next drive and was stopped on downs in Brownsboro territory on the following possession, but took a 13-0 lead when Kincade hooked up with Henderson for a 16-yard score with 9:30 left in the second.
That’s when the Bears began to make things interesting.
On the ensuing drive, Brownsboro marched it inside the Bulldogs’ 30-yard line and got on the board when Rogers’ fourth-and-14 pass connected with Patrick McCarthy for a 28-yard touchdown, which pulled Brownsboro to within 13-6 midway through the second period.
The Bulldogs went back to work on offense, answering on just five plays. A 41-yard completion from Kincade to Gabriel Robinson helped set up a Jalen Williams 8-yard touchdown run that put Chapel Hill back in front by two scores, 20-6, with 2:36 remaining until halftime.
Brownsboro took momentum into the locker room, using a pass interference and roughing-the-passer penalty on Chapel Hill to sustain its drive.
And with eight seconds left in the half, Rogers found an opening through the middle of the Bulldogs’ defense to score on a 12-yard run.
KT Thompson ran in the two-point conversion and the Bears trailed just 20-14 at halftime.
