JT girls top Lindale, clinch playoff spot

The John Tyler Lady Lions scored a 4-1 win over Lindale in a District 31-4A soccer match on Tuesday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

The win gave John Tyler a 10-10-5 overall record and clinched a playoff spot with a 4-6-0 mark in District 31-4A.

Jolenne Calleja and Esperanza Zavaleta each had two goals in the game to lead the offense for JT.

Calleja opened the scoring in the first minute of the game directing a hard shot across the goal into the upper right side of the net.

Calleja added another goal for the Lady Lions with 30:37 left in the first half.

Rebeca Ontiveros assisted on the score, connecting on a pass over the top of the defense. Calleja was able to track the pass down and tap it into the goal giving John Tyler a 2-0 lead.

The Lions’ defense was dominant throughout the first half. Kenia Delgado, Katya Delgado and Jaqui Ibarra secured the Lions side of the field throughout the game, allowing only two shots on goal in the second half.

The Lady Eagles were able to score late in the first half when Sydney Tiiman tapped in a cross from Brooklyn Van Winkle.

Zavaleta added two more goals for the Lions, the first with 28:11 left in the game and another with 21:08 remaining, securing the win and clinching a spot in the playoffs.

John Tyler scored four goals out of their 13 shots, eight were directed on goal. The Lady Lions connected on half of their second half shots scoring two of four.

Lindale finished with one goal off of 10 shots, with four shots on goal.
