John Tyler celebrated its new top-10 ranking with a 67-53 victory over Alba-Golden on Monday at the Lions Den.

The Lady Lions, who had lost the last couple years to Alba-Golden, had their closest game yet in moving to 4-0 on the same day they were ranked No. 8 in the state in Class 5A. It is the team’s highest ranking under current coach Mike Smith.

“It was a very good game,” Smith said. “Alba’s a good team. It was a great game for us.

“You have to play good against them to win so we’re just glad to finally get a win against them.”

Destini Whitehead led all scorers with 22 for JT, including four 3-pointers. Daz Johnson added 10 for the Lady Lions.

John Tyler stays at home for the fourth straight game to face crosstown rival Robert E. Lee. First tip is slated for 4:30 p.m. The boys teams will follow at approximately 6 p.m.
