DALLAS — John Tyler put together a solid showing, splitting games on the final day of the talent-driven Chris Bosh Hoopfest at Lincoln High School.

Freshman Kendarrion Johnson scored 27 points to lead JT to a 78-68 win over Dallas Spruce.

JT pushed No. 12 Dallas Lincoln to the wire before losing the nightcap 68-65.

The win against Spruce marked the first of the season for JT, which spent the first two weeks of the season in the Top 20 while playing undermanned.

“We got a much-needed win and some guys showed signs of growing up,” JT coach Tony Pinson said.

JT lost to second-ranked Dallas South Oak Cliff to start week, and on Friday to fifth-ranked Dallas Woodrow Wilson before pushing Lincoln behind 18-point efforts from Johnson and Caleb Willis.

“We had a couple of costly turnovers down the stretch,” Pinson said. “We left 10 points at the free throw line. Our kids played very well and had a chance to win.”

With football season complete, the Lions expect to get their full complement of players set to join the team on Tuesday at Atlanta after reaching the state semifinals.

“We just have to keep working and grinding,” Pinson said, “and get all our players to understand sharing playing time and we could be pretty good.”
