Porfirio Benitez and Jose Valdez each scored two goals to rally John Tyler to a 4-2 2 over Athens in the District 16-4A soccer opener for both teams Monday night at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

Benitez also added an assist for the Lions, who improve to 9-3 overall.

“It is a great start for us in district,” JT coach Howard Storey said. Storey also complimented the play of defensive midfielder Noe Diaz and the defense of Juan Cornejo.

In the junior varsity game, JT scored a 4-0 win with goals from Jose Paz, Jose Munoz, Luis Duran and Alto Alvarado.

The Lions return to play on Friday, traveling to Mabank to meet the Panthers. The JV game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.
