DALLAS — John Tyler cruised through four games Thursday to reach the semifinals of the third annual Red Bull Game Breakers 7-on-7 national finals.
All of the games were played at Jesuit College Prep School, with the Lions beating their opponents by an average of 19 points. JT now will face one of four teams — DeSoto, Cypress-Fairbanks, Arlington High or Clairton (Pa.) — in Friday’s semifinal.
The two-day event features 22 teams from seven different states: Colorado, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas.
The Lions began the day by taking out Round Rock Stony Point (28-12) before getting by Columbus (Miami, Fla.), 35-9. JT then had to face Manvel twice, winning 28-12 and 28-9 to emerge as the victor of its bracket.
John Tyler has already captured an invitational 7-on-7 tournament this summer, winning the Camp of Conquerors event. With the Lions slated to compete next week at the 7-on-7 state championship, Coleman said JT remains in high gear.
“When those guys make their minds up and they are focused, there aren’t too many teams that can compete with them,” said Coleman about JT with the Lions now 21-2 in 7-on-7 play.
“The guys played their tails off. They played John Tyler football on both sides. They competed and gave 110 percent effort. That’s all that we ask of the kids and they did.”
