John Tyler quarterback Bryson Smith has a chance to win back-to-back American State Bank Player of the Year.
Smith became eligible once again on Tuesday when the senior was named the ASB Player of the Week for week 4 of the high school football season.
Tim Haugh, ASB vice president, made the announcement.
Smith had a spectacular night and did all he could for the Lions against the Rockwall Yellow Jackets on Friday night at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. However, JT came up just short, 59-58, in the District 11-6A opener.
Smith gained a total of 614 yards of the Lions' 725 yards of total offense and accounted for six touchdowns.
The JT senior connected on 20 of 28 passing attempts for 389 yards and three touchdown passes. He rushed for 225 yard and three TDs on 20 carries.
Smith was the Week 5 Player of the Week winner last season for his effort against Whitehouse.
Also receiving votes this week was West Rusk running back Jaylon Garland, setting a school record with 393 yards rushing and six touchdowns against New Diana, and Athens junior quarterback Xavius Fulton, who rushed for 236 yards on 22 carries and hit on 5 of 17 passing attempts for 37 yards.
"Bryson is a strong leader for our football team," JT coach Ricklan Holmes said. "He constantly does what he needs to do to put our team in position to win games. He had a great night and we expect him to give this kind of effort for the rest of the season. He's a great kid and we really don't know what his ceiling is on just how good he can be. He has received several offers, but has committed to the University of Houston, following in the footsteps of former JT great and current Houston QB Greg Ward, Jr."
Haugh added, "Bryson is a great kid. Last season when he won the American State Bank Player of the Year award, he was so humbled. Just a testament to the type of person he is and obviously he is a terrific football player.
"Obviously he was on our watch list with a few others in the area. He's got a bright future ahead of him and I'm glad he and his family will be back at the Player of the Year banquet this year."
Other weekly winners have been:
Week 1: Hunter Moore, QB, Canton; Week 2: Trent Easley, QB, Grand Saline; and Week 3: Jake Smith, QB, Bishop Gorman.
Each weekly winner (weeks 1-11) of the American State Bank Player of the Week award automatically receives an invitation to the end of the year banquet to recognize the weekly winners. One of those eleven weekly winners will be pledged a $10,000 scholarship to the college or university of their choice.
Only players nominated will be considered for this weekly award. To nominate a player, visit www.asbplayeroftheweek.com.
