John Tyler found more ground to base its turnaround.
A quartet of pitchers combined for a one-hitter, and the duo of Terrance Wilson and Jawun Hart teamed up for five hits, as John Tyler trumped Arp 6-0 in a non-district baseball game Monday at Mike Carter Field.
The Lions, after winning one game last year, picked up their fourth victory — the second in shutout fashion. JT opened the season with an 11-0 win over T.K. Gorman a week earlier before going 2-3 at the Chapel Hill tournament.
"We pitched a lot of innings over the weekend and have a lot more coming up," explained second-year JT coach Justin Peirce for dividing the throwing duties. "It was a great performance pitching, base-running fielding. We hit the ball well and ran the bases well."
Chris Williams worked the first two innings, striking out two with one walk, Chris backed him with two no-hit innings, striking out one. Cesar Flowers lasted two complete innings, allowing Arp's lone hit.
Robert Garcia recorded the final three outs, two via strikeout, to close out the win.
Hart and Wilson accounted for half the Lions' hit and run totals. Wilson went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and a run to lead the Lions. Hart finished 2 for 2 with two runs scored.
Hart helped JT (4-3) to a fast start with a leadoff single in the first. Wilson followed with a triple to the left-center field wall to circle Hart, giving JT all the offense it needed. Williams drove a ball deep to left field to bring in Wilson with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead still in the first.
Devonte Jones reached base on a hit the next inning, swiped second and scored on Wilson's RBI-single for a 3-0 JT lead.
Williams singled and scored in the fifth. Cesar Flores batted in Christopher Garcia for JT's fifth run.
The Hart-Wilson combo struck a final time in the sixth. Hart ripped a double and scored on Wilson's ensuing two-bagger.
JT's pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts with one walk. JT finished with zero errors, allowing just one ball to reach the outfield.
JT has now scored 49 runs through seven games after totaling 66 during last year's 1-22 campaign.
"I've been talking to the kids all week about swinging the bat and not taking the first pitch," Peirce said. "The kids are enjoying it, having fun. It's a lot more fun than it has been."
