John Tyler secured its first district win last week and now can boast having a second Lions player chosen as the American State Bank Player of the Week.

Lions junior linebacker Martrevious Allison led the charge of a dominant defensive effort last week by JT in its 42-14 win over North Mesquite. Allison, who recently was offered by Mississippi State, filled the stat sheet with 15 tackles (3 solo), one sack, one pass breakup and two caused fumbles.

Allison is the ASB Player of the Week for Week 5 of the high school football season.

Tim Haugh, ASB vice president made the announcement.

“It’s always nice when we have a defensive player win this award that is usually dominated by offensive players,” Haugh said. “Martrevious is the anchor of a solid JT defensive unit.”

Allison leads the Lions with 51 tackles, two pass breakups, one interception and two sacks. He joins teammate Bryson Smith, the 2015 ASB Player of the Year, who was Player of the Week for week 4.

“Tre looks the part of a varsity football player,” JT coach Ricklan Holmes said. “He has been on varsity since his freshman year and he had to grow up fast to adapt to the speed of the game on Friday nights.

“He had a great freshman year followed by an outstanding sophomore year and he’s off to another great start this year. Not only is he a ferocious linebacker, but he has great football sense, is a great athlete and takes care of his grades in the classroom.

Others receiving votes for the ASB Player of the Week include Arp quarterback Tyler Stewart, Robert E. Lee defensive back Makyle Sanders and Troup running back Ramiro Martinez. Stewart led Arp in its win over Waskom; Sanders had an interception, fumble recovery and a team-leading 18 tackles in Raiders loss to Longview; and Martinez rushed for 127 yards and 3 TDs in Tigers win over Beckville.

“Look for (Allison) to wreak some havoc on JT’s opponents in the coming weeks as JT looks to make another push for the playoffs,” Haugh said.

Other weekly winners have been:

Week 1: Hunter Moore, QB, Canton; Week 2: Trent Easley, QB, Grand Saline; Week 3: Jake Smith, QB, Bishop Gorman; Week 4: Bryson Smith, QB, John Tyler.

Each weekly winner (weeks 1-11) of the American State Bank Player of the Week award automatically receives an invitation to the end of the year banquet to recognize the weekly winners. One of those eleven (11) weekly winners will be pledged a $10,000 scholarship to the college or university of their choice.

Only players nominated will be considered for this weekly award. To nominate a player, visit www.asbplayeroftheweek.com.
