John Tyler compiled a record of 4-3 to finish fifth in the Potassium Pool of Friday’s Powerade Blazing 7on7 Football Invitational in Matthews, North Carolina.

The Lions started the day with two straight victories — 19-16 over Richmond County (North Carolina) and 21-14 over Carolina Forest (South Carolina). Following a 30-21 loss to Johns Creek (Georgia), JT won over Vero Beach (Florida), 25-15. In the game on ESPN+, the Lions fell to Oakland (Tennessee), 37-2, before bouncing back to beat the Illinois team of Thornton Fractional North, 33-8. In the final game of pool play, JT lost to Life Christian Academy of Virginia, 27-17.

Richmond County and Vero Beach, who the Lions beat, tied for first in the Potassium Pool with Life Christian. The three teams were all 5-2, followed by Oakland (4-2-1), JT (4-3), Carolina Forest (2-4-1), Johns Creek (2-5) and TF North (0-7).

JT is seeded No. 18 and will take on No. 15 Timber Creek (New Jersey) at 7:30 a.m. (Central) on Saturday in bracket play. Timber Creek finished 4-3 in the Magnesium Pool.

The Lions will play either No. 2 seed McGillen-Toolen (Alabama) or No. 31 TF North (Illinois) in the second round of the double-elimination tournament. If JT wins against the Jersey squad, the Lions will play at 8:05 a.m. A loss means they will play at 8:40 a.m.

The other division winners were 7-0 Bryant (Arkansas) in the Calcium Pool, 6-1 Christ The King (New York) and 6-1 Weddington (North Carolina) in the Magnesium Pool, and 6-1 McGill-Toolen in the Sodium Pool.

ESPN3 is scheduled to show the semifinal games (1 and 1:45 p.m.) and the championship (2:30 p.m.). Games will be on ESPN+ at 8:40 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 10 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

The first-place team receives $15,000, followed by second ($7,500), third ($5,000) and fourth ($2,500). The champions receive BSN Sports vouchers to purchase sports equipment for their schools and a championship trophy.

Each game is 22 minutes with a television timeout taken during the first change of possession after the 11-minute mark of each game.

All possessions will originate from the 40-yard line to start a game, or after a turnover on downs or interception. Possession will be decided by a coin toss. No running plays are allowed.

The quarterback has four seconds to release the ball or it is blown dead with a 5-yard penalty and a loss of down. If the QB drops the snap the four second count starts immediately and the play continues. There is no rushing the QB and no RB passes. Two first downs are possible per possession, achieved when reaching the 25-yard line in three downs and reaching the 10-yard line in three downs. Once you reach the 10-yard line you have three downs to score.

Scoring includes: 6 points for touchdowns; 1 point for conversion from 5-yard line; 2 points for conversion from 10-yard line; 3 points for defensive interceptions; 2 points for defensive stops (defensive stops and interceptions are not combined) and no points for an interception on a try after touchdown).

I am a native Tylerite and I grew up reading the Tyler Morning Telegraph and The Tyler Courier-Times. My parents took both the morning and afternoon papers. I came to work here 35 years ago at the age of 23, right after college.
