JACKSONVILLE — In 2010 Jacksonville and Nacogdoches set a national record with a 12-overtime battle royale that was played in Nacogdoches.
On Friday night at Tomato Bowl, the Tribe and the Dragons played just over four hours, and after five overtime sessions it was the Indians who had earned a stunning 85-79 win over Nacogdoches, in what was District 16-5A’s biggest upset this season.
The Dragons entered the game as five-touchdown favorites.
The win was Jacksonville’s first league triumph in two years as Jacksonville moved to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in 16-5A. The Dragons slipped to 5-1 and 2-2.
The game-winning touchdown came on a 13-yard scoring trek by Datavian Thacker in the fifth extra session, one in which Jacksonville got the ball first.
The Tribe missed the two-point conversion try, which by rule is required after the second overtime — when Carter McCown lofted a pass over the head of Cameron High, who was alone in the end zone.
Nacogdoches then got the ball on the 25-yard line, needing six points to tie, with eight being enough for victory.
The Dragons, who had three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties called against them, mainly for extracurricular activities at the end of the play, was its own worst enemy as following an incomplete pass on its first play in the fifth overtime, the Dragon receiver, in frustration picked up the football and spiked it into the turf right in front of a nearby official. He then removed his helmet and slammed it to the ground.
Following the 15-yard walk off, the Dragons were forced to deal with a second-and-25 from the 40 situation.
The Jacksonville defenders saved their best for last in keeping the Dragons in check in the final session to preserve the Indian win.
The two teams combined for 1,109 total yards, with 515 of those belonging to Jacksonville.
McCown had a big night for the Indians, rushing for a team-high 170 yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns — he also tossed a pair of touchdown strikes, both of which went to Jeremy McAnally, on in the third and one in the fourth overtime frame.
Vadall Johnson rushed 17 times for 141 yards and two scores including a 56-yard run that came as time expired in the third quarter.
Datavian Thacker amassed four rushing touchdowns for the Indians.
Dragon quarterback Hunter McClellan(14-88) ran for five touchdowns and passed for two more.
