Destini Whitehead scored 22 but the story of the night was defense as John Tyler took a 54-29 victory over Bullard in the season opener for both teams on Thursday at Tyler Junior College's Wagstaff Gymnasium.

The Lady Panthers (0-1) were held to 16 points through three quarters. Star post Lexi Kirgan, who on Wednesday signed with Abilene Christian, scored eight, but most coming in the fourth quarter. She averaged 18 points per game last year.

Kirgan scored the first points of the game on a put-back then was shut out the rest of the half by Lady Lions post Daz Johnson.

"She played excellent, excellent defense, just did a great job of pressuring her and denying her the ball," JT coach Mike Smith said of Johnson. "Really proud of Daz; she was all over the floor. They worked real hard against each other."

Ashtyn Beal added 12 points for JT (1-0), which plays its home opener on Monday against Dallas South Oak Cliff at 6:15 p.m.

Abby Story led Bullard with nine points while Hannah Lloyd added eight.

"Bullard's a very good basketball team; I was really proud of our defense tonight," Smith said Smith, whose team led 34-16 after three quarters. "It was a really good opening game I felt like for both of us. Really proud of the defense that showed up and certainly made a difference in the game."
