BULLARD — Brook Hill and Bishop Gorman both came into a packed Herrington Stadium on Friday night prepared for a shootout, and Grant Hanks completed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Dumesnil with 1:36 left to give the Guard a 24-22 win.

Brook Hill was the first to strike, with Dumesnil’s 16-yard field goal.

Gorman came roaring back, scoring on its second play with a Tristan Saint 63-yard bomb to Hunter Brown. Gorman elected to go for the two-point try, scoring and setting the tone early.

The Guard fought back, scoring early in the second quarter on a 65-yard Hanks-to-Hale touchdown. The Guard also elected to go for two and made it.

Both defensive units were unwilling to bend until Brook Hill’s Gabe Lucio scored on a 6-yard rumble late in the third quarter. Zac Wilson and Chase McDermott had interceptions, but the Guard were unable to capitalize on the turnovers.

Starting the final quarter of play, the Crusaders scored on another pass. Saint and his receivers seemed to be jelling. Collin Parks had a scoring strike, and Hart Cameron hauled in a 55-yarder with 2:30 left in the game that put Gorman back on top.

With 2:23 left, the Guard looked beat. Hanks, however, had other ideas. With 1:36 left in the game, Hanks was behind the line scrambling for safety. He evaded the Crusaders, who had applied excellent pressure all night, and threw a pass out of desperation into the end zone. The ball traveled 50 yards, arching in the air and into the hands of Dumesnil.

The game was now in the hands of the Guard defense, who had been shredded all night long by Saint’s arm. With 30 seconds left in the game, the Guard defense knocked down a fourth down pass to seal the game.
