KILLEEN — The defending state champion Bullard Brook Hill Guard golf team rallied strong on Day 2 but fell three strokes short of repeating as Carrollton Prince of Peace earned the TAPPS 3A state title Tuesday at the Courses at Clear Creek.

In the girls competition, Austin Regents ran away with the team title while the Lady Guard finished fourth.

Brook Hill’s Carter Clements, Hunter Shattuck and Stormie Thoene all earned all-state honors with top-10 finishes.

Ben Mitchell won the boys tournament with rounds of 78-82—160 while Regents’ Alex Rossi shot matching 75s to turn win by eight strokes in the girls tournament.

The Guard trailed the Eagles by nine strokes after Monday’s first round and improved their score by 18 strokes, nearly making up the difference.

Clements led the Guard with his 87-82—169, which tied him for seventh. Shattuck (92-79—171) earned 10th place a year after finishing second.

Brook Hill’s Tyler Burton (86-88—174), Matthew Webb (88-88-176) and Jeffrey Yeager (93-86—179) took 13th, 14th and 15th, respectively, finishing just outside the all-state cutoff.

Thoene’s score of 97-111—208 was the 10th best among the girls scores. Her teammates were Kali Hall (111-111—222), Desarae Rowan (118-111—229), Abigail Baker (122-111—233) and Jessica Tipton (122-121—243).
