BROWNSBORO — Kayla Webb and Kaleigh Hackett put the clamps on one of the area's top offensive players and Amia Wickware hit two clutch free throws late as John Tyler took down Class 1A Division I top-ranked Martins Mill 48-45 on Friday morning at the Great East Texas Shootout.

The Lady Lions (10-5) survived a last-second 3-point attempt from the Lady Mustangs to advance to today's semifinal against Texas High at 11:30 a.m. at the Brownsboro High School gym.

"That was a fantastic win for our kids," JT coach Mike Smith said. "They showed a lot of character and a lot of composure and a lot of confidence down the stretch and a lot of teamwork going on to beat a team as good as what Martins Mill is."

Ashtyn Beal led all scorers with 17 points while Wickware added 16 and Tameal Jones 11 for the Lady Lions.

The key was Webb and Hackett's defense on Cheyenne Brown, whom they double teamed the entire game. Brown was held to seven points on two field goals after scoring 56 points in her previous two outings.

"Kaleigh and Kayla just did a tremendous job of playing defense against Cheyenne and really keeping her out of the game as much as we possibly could," Smith said. "We did what we had to do to get the win."

Alyssa Pate and Hailey Celsur scored 12 apiece to pace the Lady Mustangs.

The game went back and forth with neither side able to build a lead of more than a couple scores. It was tied until the final quarter, when JT outscored Martins Mill 8-5. Wickware and Jones each scored four points in the period.

Wickware's free throws gave JT a 48-45 lead and set off a frantic final minute, during which Martins Mill had a couple chances to tie before the final 3-point shot at the buzzer missed.

"The intensity of the game from both sides was good, real good," Smith said. "Neither team could afford to let up for one second."

Smith said the win over the defending Class 1A Division I champion was a program-building win.

"When you're playing five people, (classifications) don't matter," Smith said. "For us today, they showed up. They really showed up and I feel like we learned a lot.

"There are some wins that are big wins and there are some wins that are program-builder wins and I think that was one of those for us. I say that with all respect to Martins Mill in that."

FRANCIS SHOOTS ALL SAINTS TO BOYS FINAL

All Saints has continued its impressive non-district slate with a berth in the Great East Texas Shootout. Junior guard Aston Francis helped make that happen.

Francis dropped 42 points through the nets to lead the Trojans past Bullard, 59-58, in the GETSO boys semifinals Friday night at Brownsboro High School.

Francis, the team's assists leader, scored All Saints' first 15 points en route to finishing each half with 21 points. His last two came from the free-throw line to increase the Trojans' lead to 59-56 with 11 seconds left in the fourth.

Bullard missed a 3-pointer with time running out and settled for a layup at the buzzer.

All Saints improved to 16-1 on the season and meets Sunnyvale for the tournament championship tonight. The great start has come after the Trojans lost their starting point guard with a season-ending ACL injury in the opener.

"I couldn't be prouder," ASE coach Eddie Francis said. "We lost our most important player in the first minute of the first game. Spencer Ball has been our point guard since these kids were in the first grade. … The kids have just stepped up."

All Saints led by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, but was outscored 10-2 the rest of the way. But the Trojans, who cruised through the opening day of the tournament, came through at the line, making 8 of 8 free throws in the quarter.

The Trojans went on a 13-0 run after falling behind 48-44 early in the quarter. Francis fueled the run with 14 fourth-quarter points and made a pair of key 3-pointers to turn a one-point deficit into a five-point lead.

"He had a great game," said coach Francis, Aston's father. "He just shot the ball really well. He's always had the ability to get his shot off. What I'm proud of is he made big plays in big moments."

Zach Eschberger led Bullard with 14 points.
