In the school’s first Week Zero home opener, Grace Community rolled past state-ranked San Augustine 41-20 behind 344 total yards and five touchdowns from senior quarterback Blake White on Thursday at Clyde-Perkins Stadium.

In the first of three games of the Tyler Football Classic sponsored by Azalea Orthopedic and Texas Spine and Joint Hospital, White completed 19 of 28 for 259 yards and three scores while adding 85 yards rushing and two more touchdowns.

Perhaps most encouraging for Grace fans was the cameo from Cougars senior Garrett Newman, who was questionable coming into the season due to health concerns. In limited action, Newman rushed three times for 24 yards. He accounted for more than 2,000 yards in his prolific junior season.

The Cougars (1-0) held the Wolves (0-1), ranked No. 6 in UIL Class 1A by The Associated Press, to 267 total yards while racking up 463 for themselves.

Quarterback Bobby Tanner threw for 125 yards – 98 and a touchdown to Al Horton – and Tony Hubbard sprinted his way to 79 yards and a score to lead San Augustine. Tanner also had a rushing touchdown.

A sparkling interception on the sideline by Lin Gillham helped the Cougars take a 27-12 lead into halftime. Gillham’s grab gave the Cougars enough time for Kade Clayton to haul in a 15-yard touchdown with nine seconds left in the half.

Clayton gobbled up 131 yards rushing and receiving, including two touchdown hauls. Statler Lewis led all receivers with 100 yards, tip-toeing the sideline for a 42-yard score late in the first half.

Sophomore Adam Graham added a running touchdown for the Cougars late in the first quarter. After White’s helmet came off on the play prior, forcing him to the sideline, Graham lined up under center and strolled in from two yards out for a 14-0 lead. The drive was set up by a fumble recovery by Levi Crozier.

San Augustine immediately came back with a 61-yard strike from Tanner to Horton and cut its deficit to 14-12 with a 31-yard scamper from Hubbard, who broke free from the line of scrimmage on a fourth-and-1 to race into the end zone.
