CARROLLTON — Grace Community juniors Emma Yeatts, Sydney Sumpter and Mikaila Massenburge all won events to help the Lady Cougars win their first district title at the TAPPS 2-4A track and field meet Thursday at Prince of Peace Christian School.

The Lady Cougars racked up 131 points to defeat the host Lady Eagles, who finished second at 107.5. Defending league champ Bishop Gorman took third with 98.5 points, 1.5 ahead of Waco Reicher, the 2011 champ.

"They worked really hard all year," said Mike Maddox, who coaches Grace along with Norm Thompson. "They've come a long way the last three years and got second last year.

"To go out and win it all this year was pretty special for them."

In the boys competition, Grace was unable to retain its title as Prince of Peace used its relays to edge the Cougars 113-103. The Crusaders finished sixth with 61 points while All Saints was ninth with 24 points.

The top four in each event qualify for next Thursday's TAPPS 4A North Region meet in Abilene.

Sumpter claimed the 100-meter hurdles gold in 16.03 seconds, with Massenburge in second at 17.25, more than half a second ahead of third place. They swapped places in the 300, with Massenburge winning in 49.10 and Sumpter following at 49.64, more than 1.5 seconds ahead of third place.

"They both came at the critical times when the score was tight and just gave us a little bit of cushion," Grace coach Mike Maddox said of the hurdles wins. "Going in we felt we could go one and two in the girls hurdles and they didn't let us down."

Yeatts won the triple jump by four inches with a distance of 34 feet, 9½ inches. She took third in both the high jump (4-08) and long jump (16-03).

"That was a big day for her," Maddox said.

The Lady Cougars also had success in the sprints, with Whitney Bane (13.39) and Lexi Trimble (13.41) taking third and fourth, respectively, in the 100. Grace sophomore Lauren Bone finished second in the 200 (27.78) and junior Monica Lim added points in the 1,600 (second, 5:53.71) and 3,200 (fourth, 12:58.48).

Gorman's Sharon Kariampuzha qualified in the 3,200 with a third-place finish (12:40.41).

In the relays, the Lady Cougars took second in the 400, fifth in the 800 and fourth in the 1,600 to hold off Prince of Peace, Gorman and Reicher.

The Lady Crusaders won the 1,600 relay in 4:15.48 with the group of Olivia Dugan, Madeline Raney, Monica Hand and Kelly Frossard. They finished third in the 400 relay and second in the 800.

Rilee Miller supplied the Lady Cougars with points in the throws, taking second in shot put (33-00) and fifth in discus (81-02). Gorman senior Kimi Prevost took third in the shot put (32-05) and second in discus (87-03). Jazmine Williams of Dallas Parish Episcopal comfortably won both throws (38-03 shot put, 99-07 discus).

Gorman senior Allie Buzbee qualified with a second-place finish in the 400. Her teammate, sophomore Kelly Frossard, took third in the 900. Raney, a Texas Tech commit, qualified with a fourth-place finish in the high jump and ran in all three relays.

Like the girls, the Grace boys swept the hurdles gold and silvers, led by the defending state champ in the two events, junior Kade Clayton, who crushed the competition in both events.

In the 110 hurdles, Clayton won in 14.67, easily ahead of teammate Lin Gillham in second place at 16.68. In the 300, Clayton's time of 38.45 was more than four seconds ahead of Gillham's second-place 42.58. Clayton also finished fifth in the long jump.

Josh Boylan gave the Cougars another district champion in the discus, throwing 132-06. He finished second in the shot put (47-09) behind Gorman's Matthew Roe, whose throw went 50-05.

Gorman senior Sam Becker claimed the pole vault title at 12-00, with teammate Hunter Brown taking third at 11-00. The Crusaders picked up silver medals in the triple jump from Adam Aucar (39-04¾), 3,200 from Nick DiPaolo (10:54.15) and 800 from Chance Findlay (2:06.09).

Findlay narrowly beat Grace sophomore James Burden in third by 0.09 seconds in the 800; Aucar edged third-place Blake White (39-02), a senior from Grace. Burden also qualified in the 1,600, finishing third in 5:02.50.

In the 400, Grace senior Statler Lewis finished second in 53.35 with Logan Klouda right behind in third at 53.51 to give All Saints its best finish of the day.

The Trojans performed best in the 3,200, finishing fourth through sixth with Billy Swartworth, Nicholas Klouda and Benton Owen, respectively. Swartworth also took fourth in the 1,600 and the Trojans took fifth in the 1,600 relay.

Gorman scored with a sixth-place finish in the 1,600 relay and a fifth-place finish in the 800 relay.

The Cougars were second in the 1,600 relay, but sixth in the 800 and eighth in the 400. The first-team all district football foursome of White, Lewis, Gillham and Clayton ran the 1,600 relay.

Grace earned 17 points in the relays compared to 48 for Prince of Peace, allowing the Eagles to secure the team victory.

"It seemed like we were always chasing, trying to cut into a pretty big lead," Maddox said.
