GLADEWATER — The Gladewater Bears looked to be facing a tie with less than a minute left in the third quarter. However, a blocked field goal and a 12-play, 85-yard drive proved to be too much as the Bears defeated Canton 27-7 at Jack V. Murphy-Bear Stadium.
Canton moved the ball to the Bear 2-yard line before the Bear defense stiffened and blocked the Eagles’ field-goal attempt.
The Bears went back to the ground attack that Coach Murphy would have been proud of. The Bears rushed 10 times for 50 yards on the drive, with the big play when Derrick Daniels connected with Nick Johnson for a 35-yard pass play. Daniels finished the drive off with a 1-yard run to push the Gladewater lead to 21-7.
Gladewater’s Daedrian Gordon intercepted a Canton pass and returned it to the Bear 48.
The Bears worked the ground game again with an 11-play scoring drive capped by a Darion Gregory touchdown for the final score.
After Gladewater scored twice in the first half, Daniels found D.L. Daniels for an 85-yard catch and run in the second quarter with 11:46 to give the Bears a 7-0 lead after Travis Dennis connected on the PAT.
After the Gladewater defense forced a three-and-out, Daniels found Nick Johnson in the corner of the end zone on fourth-and-3 at the Eagle 6.
Canton took the second half kickoff and quarterback Eric Walters took control, running four and passing twice to Eagle receivers to drive Canton to cut the deficit to 14-7 on a 2-yard run with 9:07 left in the third period.
Gladewater was led in rushing by Gregory with 106 yards on the ground and an efficient quarterback Daniels with four completions for 168 yards.
Walters passed for 205 yards and Connor Eiland had 101 yards receiving for Canton.
