Girls Rally In Grace Sweep

Grace Community trailed five seconds into the game. It took 31 minutes, 21 seconds, but the Lady Cougars rallied when it counted.

Grace junior Rebekah Provines scored a game-high 16 points while holding All Saints’ top scorer without a point in the final 20 minutes as the Lady Cougars rallied for a 42-39 victory in a TAPPS 2-4A matchup at Grace Gym on Tuesday. Grace swept a doubleheader with All Saints as the boys won 42-37.

Olivia Moharer scored her only point of the game on a free throw with 0:34 to play to give Grace (10-10, 3-2 TAPPS 2-4A) a 40-39 lead. The Trojans turned the ball over twice in the final 34 seconds and Provines buried two free throws for the final margin. Rachel Yates’ 60-foot heave at the buzzer was on line but fell short.

“There’s something about our team — maybe it’s the five seniors — we just refuse to lose at the end and did what it took to win,” Grace coach Jeff Smith said.

All Saints led 39-33 with 3:28 to play after Gabby Bosworth drilled a 3-pointer. Grace then ended the game on an 11-0 run. Provines scored half her points in the fourth quarter.

Catherine Rook tied the game at 39 on a short basket after Smith drew up the play on the fly moments before during a time out. Rook finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Jasmine Owens led All Saints (11-12, 2-3) with 12 points while Lanna Johnson had 10 points and 16 boards. Sharpshooter Kelcee Harwood was held to six points, none in the second half, by the defense of Provines, who had three blocks and a steal.

“I can’t say enough about Rebekah’s game tonight,” Smith said. “She’s the reason — and Catherine’s shooting — were the only reasons we were able to hang in there.”

In addition to scoring for the game’s only lead change, Moharer supplied 11 rebounds and four blocks. Teammate Megan Strnadel added 10 rebounds.

In the boys game, Jimmy Negem hit 9 of his 13 shots to pour in a game-high 19 points as Grace held off All Saints.

Grace (13-8, 2-3) gained its first lead at the 4:39 mark of the first quarter, pushed its advantage to as many as 14 in the second quarter and hung on late for the win.

The Cougars avenged a 61-52 loss to the Trojans in the final of the Brookshire Classic on Dec. 3.

Jonathan Lewis had 12 points to pace All Saints (13-10, 2-3). Benjamin Taylor added nine rebounds (all in the second half) and Brad Robertson had six steals for the Trojans.

All Saints cut the lead to 40-37 on a putback by Taylor after a Robertson steal with 0:46 to play. Keaton Yeatts then hit two free throws for the Cougars to push the lead back to five. All Saints missed four attempts from beyond the arc in the final 30 seconds.
