BROWNSBORO — The Rose City went 1-1 in the finals of the Great East Texas Shootout on Saturday.

The All Saints Trojans won the boys championship, while the John Tyler Lady Lions finished second in the girls division of the annual basketball bonanza.

The Trojans, who improved to 17-1 under coach Eddie Francis, scored a 69-66 victory over Sunnyvale in the title game, while the Lady Lions, who are 11-6 under coach Mike Smith, lost in the finals to the defending Class 4A state champion Georgetown, 50-36.

BOYS

All Saints jumped out to a 27-10 lead and then held on for the victory.

Jaired Maddox and Luke Lee led the Trojans with 18 points apiece, while Aston Francis, who hit for 42 in the semifinals on Friday, added 14.

"One of the goals these guys set this year was to win championships at every tournament. So far they have accomplished their goal," said Francis, whose club has won the Austin Brentwood Tournament and their own Bruce G. Brookshire Tournament. "I am so very proud of them. Jaired Maddox hurt himself in the first game and played through it. Every night it's someone else stepping up for us. The chemistry is great, they are very unselfish and they work hard defensively."

Senior Josh Quinn led the Raiders (7-2) with 20 points, while Lawson Ayo (13 points) and Ryan Cottingame (12) were also in double figures.

"That shows the character of our boys; they are special," Sunnyvale coach Chris Softley said of his team trying to rally. "These boys don't blink in the face of adversity."

A key portion of the contest was in the third period when the Raiders had closed to within 54-46 with 21 seconds showing. The Trojans missed a shot, but Maddox swiped the pass and scored. He was fouled and made the three-point play to push All Saints up by 57-46.

In the fourth period, the Trojans did not score a bucket but the squad hit 12 of 16 free throw attempts, including 7 of 8 by Aston Francis.

The Trojans play host to Slocum on Monday (6:30 p.m.) and Atlanta on Friday; and then try for their fourth tournament championship in the Wagstaff Holiday Classic Dec. 26-28 at Tyler Junior College.

GIRLS

The Lady Lions got off to a slow start against the taller Lady Eagles, falling behind 27-8 at halftime. JT made a game of it in the second half, but could not overcome the early deficit.

Ashtyn Beal led the Lady Lions with 13 points while Amia Wickware added 12 points.

Georgetown (9-4) had a balanced scoring attack, led by Charisma Alexander's 14 points. Taylor LaCour added nine points.

"I think we had a great tournament and it was an opportunity to play Georgetown — they are so well-coached and have tradition," Smith said. "The kids played hard, but we just couldn't score early. The shots were not falling, but Georgetown does some things to take those shots away too. The kids never quit against Georgetown and I'm really, really proud of that.

"Overall, it was just a fantastic tournament for us — Canton is a very good team, Martins Mill is a very good team and Texas High — everybody we played made us have to play better. It is a great to get us prepared going into the Christmas holidays."

While the buckets were not falling, JT was stellar at the charity stripe, hitting 12 of 15 attempts.

The Lady Lions advanced to the final by defeating Texas High, 41-36, in the semifinals on Saturday morning. Beal hit for 19 points. Georgetown won its semifinals game, 43-41, over Lewisville Hebron.

JT takes a break for Christmas and returns to take part in the Macy Chenevert Patriot Holiday Tournament Dec. 26-28 at UT Tyler's Herrington Patriot Center.
