LINDALE — In a clash between two teams that like to turn up the pressure on defense, the Edgewood Lady Dogs prevailed — and left no doubt about it.
Edgewood’s press produced 26 steals — 16 of which came in the first half — in an 88-58 win over New Diana on Thursday in their Class 2A Region III area playoff game at Eagle Gymnasium.
The Lady Dogs (27-6) advanced to meet either New Boston or Tatum next week in the regional quarterfinals. New Diana completed its season with a 28-5 record.
Edgewood senior Susan Agesen led all players with 27 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Senior guard Chandler Short finished with 24 points, connecting on four 3-pointers, with five steals. Junior guard Micaela Brown also posted double figures with 13 points and a team-high six steals.
Senior Montana Harrison paced New Diana in the loss, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds to go with two steals in her final high school game.
New Diana took a 1-0 lead to begin the game on a free throw from junior Kimmy Hendricks (12 points, seven rebounds.). The Lady Eagles full-court press had befuddled Edgewood in the opening minutes, but a basket from senior S’Andra Govan put Edgewood in front, 4-2 with 6:11 left in the first period.
Then Edgewood turned up its own pressure, constantly forcing the game to be played at a breakneck pace.
The result was New Diana crumbling under a mountain of turnovers.
Edgewood completed the first period outscoring New Diana 19-8 before beginning the second period with a 12-3 run. The end result of the 31-13 rampage was a 20-point lead that only grew from there.
“When they turned, they saw us and we wanted to be in their face,” Edgewood coach Kyle Short said. “Maybe somewhere in that first quarter, they got tired of that. They’ve got some offensive players and a couple times we turned them loose, but we wanted to be in their face enough to win the game and I guess we did.”
Edgewood led 45-23 at halftime and heated up from the outside in the second half, connecting on six 3-pointers.
