After two straight losses, the Kilgore Bulldogs were anxious to open district play on a positive note.

They did just that with a 35-7 victory over Chapel Hill in the District 10-4A Division I opener at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium in Kilgore on Friday.

One of the key players for Kilgore was junior free safety Donovan Adkins, who picked off three passes. He also had three tackles, along with a rushing TD and caught two passes.

For his performance, Adkins has been named the Peltier Kia Tyler Defensive Player of the Week for the seventh week of the high school football season.

He will be featured on a poster, sponsored by Peltier Kia Tyler, in Friday’s The Zone special section of the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Previous winners were Chapel Hill senior linebacker Adrian Lacy (Week 1), Troup senior linebacker Max Hale (Week 2), Grand Saline senior linebacker Bryce Smith (Week 3), Tyler Lee senior defensive end/linebacker Jamal Ligon (Week 4), John Tyler junior free safety Travion Ates (Week 5) and Gladewater senior middle linebacker Zach Villarreal (Week 6).

Fans can watch Adkins, who is also a standout baseball player, and his Bulldogs on Friday night when Kilgore (4-2, 1-0) meets district opponent Henderson (4-2, 1-0) at Lion Stadium in Henderson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

I am a native Tylerite and I grew up reading the Tyler Morning Telegraph and The Tyler Courier-Times. My parents took both the morning and afternoon papers. I came to work here 35 years ago at the age of 23, right after college.
