LONGVIEW - Robert E. Lee's Juan Davlin whipped in a free kick from long distance that evaded everyone, including the Lufkin goalkeeper for the only goal of the afternoon as the Red Raiders topped No. 1 Lufkin 1-0 Friday at the Lobo Soccer Invitational.
The victory raises REL's record to 3-1-1.
It was the second top-ranked team for the Red Raiders to meet on the pitch in as many days. Lee tied Kilgore (No. 1 in Class 4A) 1-1 on Thursday. Lee closes out the weekend against Forney at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lobo Stadium.
Lee coach Marty Germany said even the Red Raider players were trying to figure out if Davlin's free-kick deflected off someone in the box, but regardless, it turned out to be the winning goal.
"I think all the traffic (in front of him) froze their goalkeeper," Germany said about Davlin's goal.
Lee nearly doubled its lead minutes later but was denied by the goalpost.
REL keeper Anthony Pirtle secured his first clean sheet of the season.
