CORSICANA - On the first really cold Friday night football night, the Corsicana Tigers used a quick-strike offense and an opportunistic defense to defeat the Lindale Eagles 35-24 at Tiger Stadium.
Junior quarterback Blake Hoffman got the Tigers on the board first by connecting with senior running back Z’Antyler Hooks out of the backfield for a 68-yard touchdown. The PAT was blocked. Lindale responded midway through the second quarter on a 7-yard pass from Dillon Heinaman to Jordan Robinson to garner a 7-6 lead.
Perhaps the biggest momentum swing of the game occurred when Corsicana defensive end Melvin Martin stripped an Eagle running back of the ball and rumbled to the Lindale 9-yard line. Hooks quickly ran it in for the touchdown and the Tigers led 14-7, after converting the two-point conversion.
Eagle kicker Jose Guevara narrowed the margin to 14-10 at the 1:24 mark of the second quarter on a 33-yard field goal, but the Tigers struck on the very next offensive play on a 67-yard bomb from Hoffman to junior wide receiver Jervontae Anderson putting the score 21-10 at the half.
The Tigers picked up in the third quarter where they left off at the end of the first half when Hoffman again hit Hooks out of the backfield, this time for 72 yards putting Corsicana up 28-10. Hoffman would get his fourth touchdown pass of the night on a 27-yard jump ball to Ike Hargrave upping the lead to 35-10.
Lindale scored twice in the fourth quarter on a Conner Boyette 8-yard touchdown reception and a Heinaman 1-yard keeper to make the final 35-24 Corsicana.
Tiger quarterback Hoffman threw for 324 yards and Hooks snabbed three passes out of the backfield for 157 yards and two touchdowns. However, the Lindale defense stuffed Hoffman on the ground by limiting the dual-threat QB to nine yards on 14 attempts. Ty McDaniel, Bryan Edwards, and Justin Little stifled the Tigers’ ground game.
For the Eagles, Jordan Robinson carried 29 times for 129 yards and Heinaman passed for 183 yards and two touchdowns. Receivers Brennan Moore and Cooper Azbell had 6 receptions apiece.
Lindale (4-4, 1-2) play hosts to Jacksonville and Corsicana (5-3, 3-0) entertains Whitehouse next Friday night.
