FRANKSTON - Chapel Hill senior Mykaela Alfred scored 29 points with the Lady Bulldogs surviving a frantic final 30 seconds to hang on and defeat Mabank 68-67 on Friday in a Class 4A area girls basketball playoff at Frankston High School.
Chapel Hill (27-9) now advances to the regional quarterfinals where it will meet either Pleasant Grove or Bullard. Mabank completes its season at 18-13.
“It was a crazy game, but I am so proud of my team for overcoming adversity and just pulling the game through,” said Alfred, who also had six steals. “It’s a great feeling and I am so glad that we are advancing.”
Natalya Overshown made 1 of 2 free throws with 29 seconds left to put Chapel Hill in front by two points, 68-66.
The rest of the game featured a multitude of missed free throws and shot attempts by both teams.
With 15 seconds remaining, Alfred made a steal and attempted to pass to a teammate, only for Mabank’s Hannah Hudson to swipe the pass and start going the other way before being fouled. The senior post finished with 13 points, three steals and eight blocked shots.
She stepped to the line with a chance to tie and immediately made the first free throw.
“So many things were running through my mind and I was just hoping (she’d miss),” Alfred said.
Hudson’s second attempt hit off the front of the rim and was rebounded by a Mabank player who missed a jumper. Eventually after a Chapel Hill player grabbed the rebound and threw an outlet pass to a teammate, who was then engulfed by three Mabank players, all swiping at the ball.
The referee deemed the Lady Bulldogs player stepped out of bounds, which gave Mabank one final chance to win, down 68-67, with 1.5 seconds remaining.
A pass made it to a Lady Panther, who then tried to quickly get it to Hudson, but it was stolen by Chapel Hill’s April Walker to end the game.
“We lost in the quarterfinals last year in a game just like (this),” Chapel Hill coach Jeremy Durham said. “That was a great stinking basketball game.”
Ty’Liyah Mitchell scored nearly all of her 17 points in the second half with Chapel Hill teammate Kia Moore adding 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Mabank was led in the loss by 15 points from Carson Marsh and 10 by Izzy Hardy. The Lady Panthers trailed Chapel Hill 66-60 with 1:55 remaining before Jill Odom drained consecutive 3-pointers, her second one making the score 67-66.
Then Overshown was fouled, went to the line with 29 seconds remaining and that proved to be enough for the Lady Bulldogs.
“Both teams played super hard and it came right down to the end,” Mabank coach Christie Shoulders said. “A free throw here, a little six-foot jump shot there and it would have been a different scenario.
As a coach you want to be in the ball game and have a chance at the end, and my girls were there, it just got a bad bounce and we didn’t get it Chapel Hill outplayed us and they deserve the victory.”
Chapel Hill led 29-26 at halftime thanks to 17 points by Alfred. Mabank pushed in front, 41-39, with 3:18 remaining in the third quarter, only for Alfred to answer with a 3-pointer and a layup.
The Lady Panthers scored six points in the final 46 seconds of the third, capped by a buzzer-beating shot from Marsh to lead 51-46 entering the fourth.
