Athens came in with the undefeated record. Chapel Hill came out with the win.
Behind 304 total yards and five total touchdowns from quarterback Andrew Black, the Bulldogs made it a clean sweep for District 16-3A with a 52-26 victory over the Hornets in a Class 3A Division I bi-district playoff at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium on Friday.
Chapel Hill (7-4) advances to play in the area round against Crandall (5-5), which beat Paris 22-7, at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Royse City.
Athens ended its season with the unenviable record of 10-1, having completed its first undefeated regular season in program history one week before.
Black ran for 141 yards and three scores while completing 12 of 18 passes for 163 yards and two more touchdowns for the Bulldogs, who are in the postseason for the first time since claiming a 2011 state championship at Cowboys Stadium.
With Chapel Hill's victory, District 16-3A swept 15-3A by a combined tally of 201-33.
Logan Fuller ran 32 times for a game-high 185 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Hornets. The sophomore finished a stellar season with 1,725 yards. Anthony Sanders added 90 yards rushing and 66 through the air as Athens put up 403 yards of offense but couldn't slow down Chapel Hill.
The Hornets came into Friday's meeting with one of the best defenses in East Texas, allowing 238 yards per game. The Bulldogs passed that by halftime and finished with 480 yards, easily passing the 357 yards and 28 points by Palestine that had been the most allowed by Athens.
Chapel Hill led 12-7 at the start of the second quarter when Wesley Thompson and Rex Cicero combined for a momentum-swinging play for the Bulldogs. With Athens attempting a 24-yard field goal, Thompson burst through to block the kick. Cicero, a junior lineman, scooped up the ball and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown.
Jeffery Minor caught six passes for 59 yards, including one touchdown for the Bulldogs while teammate Gabriel Robinson caught the other touchdown, finishing with 75 yards on three catches.
Devin Hall, the Hornets' other 1,000-yard rusher, had 55 yards and a score. Travon Fuller had four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.
