MANSFIELD -Lorena held off Canton’s comeback try in the final minutes to deny the Eagles in a 35-28 loss Friday in their Class 4A Division II area playoff game at Vernon Newsom Stadium.
Canton running back Jordan Jackson scored on a 22-yard run to help slice the Eagles deficit to 7 points with 5:11 remaining.
Lorena took the ensuing possession and never relinquished it. With just over two minutes remaining and Canton now out of timeouts, Lorena’s Jacob Spivey converted out of the wildcat formation fourth-and-two.
The first down sealed the win for Lorena, which moves on to face Atlanta next week in the regional round at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium in Mesquite.
Canton completes its season at 6-6.
Jackson led the Eagles with 146 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Hunter Moore was 11 of 16 passing for 85 yards and a touchdown and added a 3-yard rushing score in the first half alone. His second TD of the half came on a 7-yard scoring pass to Brazos Hesskew to tie the score 14-14 at halftime.
Spivey hauled in a 56-yard touchdown pass to give Lorena 28-21 lead early in the first quarter. An interception helped Lorena increase that advantage to 35-21 on a 1-yard scoring run by Spivey.
Canton, undaunted, went 80 yards in 10 plays before Jackson finished it off, but couldn’t get the ball back after that to complete the comeback.
