BROWNSBORO — Thanks to an effective offense and a shut-down defense, the Bullard Panthers stayed alive in their quest for a playoff berth.

Quarterback Colton Mebane directed the crisp Panther attack to a 42-0 win over Brownsboro in a District 17-3A game on Friday before about 3,200 fans at Bear Stadium.

With one game to play, the Panthers (5-4) have positioned themselves for a possible postseason bid.

With Athens falling to Rusk, 38-3, Bullard and Athens are both 1-2 in league play. Brownsboro was eliminated with a 1-3 district mark.

Chapel Hill leads the district at 3-0, followed by Rusk at 2-1. Bullard can make the playoffs with a win over Rusk next week and an Athens loss to CH.

The Panthers and Eagles are scheduled to play in Bullard.

Mebane hit on 8 of 9 pass attempts for 189 yards and three touchdown passes. He tossed TD passes to Zach Holladay (8 yards), Haden Bryant (67) and Jess Wood (41).

Bryant had three catches for 97 yards.

Also, the Panthers rushed for 263 yards, led by Houston Alexander’s 122 yards on 22 attempts. Alexander also scored on runs of 5 and 2 yards. Mebane added 51 yards on 13 totes.

Tanner Schmidt almost hit the century mark by gaining 93 yards on 18 attempts. He scored on a 20 yard run.

Leading the way up front was the Bullard offensive line of Trevor Rumbelow, Britt Thomas, Aaron Johnson, Dylan Searcy and Matt Wood.

Defensively, the Panthers held the Bears to just 166 yards of total offense, including 43 yards rushing.

Wood paced the Bullard defense by recovering a fumble and picking off a pass.

Quarterback Shelby Rogers led the Bears by hitting 12 of 22 pass attempts for 123 yards. Cody Strickland (63 yards) and Nick Jones (21) had four catches each.

Brownsboro ends its season with a 1-9 mark as the Bears have a bye next week.
