Brownsboro wins opener under new coach, 26-21

BROWNSBORO - The Brownsboro Bears began the Greg Pearson era with a 26-21 win over the Canton Eagles on Friday night.

“We are so excited for our kids. Boy, didn’t they get after it,” said Pearson, in his first year as head coach after previously serving as defensive coordinator at Waskom.

Kevon Thompson highlighted the Bears’ attack with scoring runs of 22, 80 and 19 yards. Saul Williams also scored on a 12-yard run. Luis Suarez kicked two extra points.

The Eagles countered with a pair of McGwire Martin touchdown passes - 27 yards to Tanner Moore and 20 yards to Carter Day. Jair Rodriquez kicked both extra points for Canton.

Brownsboro had a 26-14 lead at halftime.

The second half scoring started off with Martin completing a 43-yard pass to Cameron Sullivan. Rodriquez kicked the PAT. Both teams played inspired ball right up until the final 20 seconds when Ashton Williams intercepted an Eagle pass in his own end zone with 19 seconds to go to seal the win for the Bears.

Brownsboro (1-0) travels to Spring Hill in Longview next week, while Canton (0-1) is on the road at Grace Community.
