KILLEEN — The defending state champion Bullard Brook Hill boys golf team sits within striking distance after the first of two rounds of the TAPPS 3A state golf tournament on Monday.

The Guard shot 353 at the Courses at Clear Creek, good for third place. Brook Hill trails Carrollton Prince of Peace by nine strokes and Conroe The Woodlands Christian by three strokes.

The Lady Guard turned in a round of 448 and sit in fourth place. Austin Regents holds a strong lead at 392, followed by San Antonio Keystone (416) and Hallettsville Sacred Heart (438).

Tyler Burton led the Guard golfers with an 86, leaving him in a five-way tie for seventh. Ben Mitchell of Houston Cypress Christian and Zach Partin of Prince of Peace set the pace with matching 78s after the first round.

Also turning in strong rounds for Brook Hill were Carter Clements (12th, 87); Matthew Webb (T13, 88), Hunter Shattuck (92) and Jeffrey Yeager (93).

Alex Rossi, of Regents, leads all girls golfers by four strokes, firing a 75 in the first round. Stormie Thoene, in seventh after her round of 97, leads the Lady Guard golfers. Also competing for Brook Hill were Kalie Hall (13th, 111), Desarae Rowan (118), Abigail Baker (122) and Jessica Tipton (122).

The second and final round is today.
