UNION GROVE — Trailing by 18 points and committing two turnovers by halftime, Big Sandy looked out of sync.
But that was before senior quarterback James Ellis led a second-half charge that overcame the 18-point deficit and propelled the Wildcats to a 46-30 win over the Union Grove Lions in non-district play Friday.
Ellis finished the night 8 of 14 passing for 157 yards and two touchdowns. He added 70 yards and two more scores on the ground. A 38-yard carry with 5:25 left in the fourth put the nail in the coffin.
The Wildcats (2-2), trailing 24-12 midway through the third quarter, put together a four-play, 66-yard drive that ended with an Ellis rushing touchdown. Down by six, Big Sandy went for two, cutting the lead to four behind another Ellis carry.
The momentum had shifted, and with 9:05 left in the game, Big Sandy started a drive on its own 18. Senior running back George Bauman gave the Wildcats the big play they were looking for when he rumbled 82 yards for a touchdown to put Big Sandy up 26-24.
The Wildcats never trailed again, and scored on their next three possessions using less than three plays on each drive.
Josh Sheeley hauled in a 69-yard scoring reception from Ellis, Ellis then scooted 38 yards for a touchdown and Josh Jackson scored on a 51-yard run.
Union Grove (2-2) had more than 200 yards of total offense, but was limited to 62 yards in the second half.
