BROWNSBORO - The Brownsboro started off district play on the right foot on Friday night, scoring a 35-14 win over the Mabank Panthers at Bear Stadium.
“We needed this victory to begin district,” Brownsboro coach Jason Hooker said. “The guys played well on both sides of the ball.”
Brownsboro improves to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in District 8-4A Division I play, while the Panthers fall to 0-6 and 0-1.
The Bears took a 21-0 halftime lead. Jamal Bell tossed a 14-yard TD pass to Kenneth Woods for the first TD. Luis Suarez kicked the PAT.
Bell then scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards, while Suarez booted both extra points for a 21-0 advantage.
Mabank got on the board in the third quarter as Jacob Collingsworth found the end zone from 11-yards out. Alex Helm made the PAT, but the Bears still led 21-7.
Brownsboro went on top 28-7 in the fourth quarter as Bell scored on a 3-yard dash and Suarez kicked the PAT.
Mabank got back on the scoreboard as Clay Conway connected with Helm for a 46-yard scoring toss. Helm made the PAT and the Panthers pulled within 28-14.
However, the Bears put the game away when Clayton Orr hauled in a 20-yard TD reception from Bell. Suarez made the PAT for the final score of 35-14.
Next Friday, the Bears travel to Van, while Mabank has a bye.
