Ramon Mitchell scored a touchdown rushing and fell on a fumble in the end zone on a kickoff as Beckville scored a 56-6 win over Union Grove on Thursday in a Class 2A Division I playoff game at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
The Bearcats improve to 10-1 on the season and advance to the area round to meet the winner Friday's game between Alto (10-0) and Groveton (3-7) next week. Alto and Groveton play at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Madisonville.
The Lions end their season at 4-7.
Mitchell led the Bearcats with 120 yards on 15 carries, while Jacari Reed added 96 yards and two TDs on 12 attempts. Quarterback Trey Lindsay was 2 of 3 for 72 yards and a TD.
Beckville jumped out to a quick 21-0 first-quarter lead. The Bearcats got on the board when Lindsay hit Braden Wise for a 59-yard TD strike. Joe Saucedo booted the first of his eight PATs as the clocked showed 6:07.
The Bearcats got another TD without the clock moving when Mitchell jumped on a fumble in the end zone after a misplay by the Lions.
Mitchell concluded the first quarter with a 50-yard dash and the Bearcats were rolling 21-0.
Beckville added two TDs in the second quarter - 1-yard run by Ethan Harris and a 3-yard dash by Reed. Thus, the Bearcats had a 35-0 halftime advantage.
Reed began the third quarter with a 2-yard run and the Bearcats led 42-0.
Union Grove got on the board when Luke Dougherty hauled in a 16-yard TD pass from Austin Owens. The extra-point attempt was blocked.
Lindsay rounded out the third quarter scoring on a 10-yard TD run and the Bearcats led 49-6 heading in the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Javon Lewis added a 12-yard TD run.
UG quarterback Owens rushed for 93 yards on 29 carries and hit on 3 of 11 pass attempts for 62 yards.
The Bearcat defense came up with four turnovers – three interceptions and the fumble in the end zone.
