GLADEWATER — Coming off a 3-0 loss last week to Wills Point, the Gladewater Bears were looking to make a statement.
The Bears did just that on Friday, hammering the Rusk Eagles 38-7 in a homecoming win at Jack V. Murphy-Bear Stadium.
Gladewater got on the scoreboard first, using 13 plays that netted 65 yards, capped off by a 1-yard run by Darion Gregory.
After an Eagles punt, Gladewater started its next drive on the Rusk 48. On the first play, Derrick Daniels handed off to senior running back Charles Gordon who broke two tackles on his way to the end zone and a 13-0 lead.
The Bears scored again on their next possession, using a seven-play drive the ended when Gregory scored from 4 yards out for a 19-0 lead. Gregory finished the game with 18 carries for 169 yards and two scores.
Daniel, the Bears junior quarterback, did a good job of managing the game as well as completing 8 of 14 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles were able to find the end zone in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 1-yard run by Ray Foreman.
