Gorman downs Brook Hill in district opener

Sid Cleofe scored two key buckets in the second half, both off assists from Miles Minnick, as the Bishop Gorman Crusaders opened TAPPS District 3-5A basketball play with a 50-37 win over Bullard Brook Hill on Monday at Haddad Gymnasium in Tyler.

Cleofe led the Crusaders (11-10, 1-0) with 15 points, while Minnick, who was in foul trouble most of the game, hit 4 of 5 shot attempts and finished with nine points. Grant McInnis added nine points for BG.

Late in the third quarter, Minnick dished to Cleofe who nailed a 3-pointer to give TKG a 34-24 advantage. Then with 3:36 on the clock in the fourth quarter, the Crusaders went up 45-29 on a basket by Cleofe off a Minnick assist.

Others scoring for Gorman were Dawson Douglas (8 points), Giancarlo Petosa (6) and Brett Petrakian (3).

McInnis had three 3-pointers with Minnick, Cleofe and Douglass hitting one each.

The Crusaders hit 10 of 17 free throw attempts, while the Guard connected on 9 of 18.

William Roberts and Joseph Johnson led Brook Hill (11-7, 0-1) with nine points each.

Others scoring for the Guard were Noah Langemeier (5), Grayson Murry (5), Tyjuan Cannon (4), Preston Hardee (3) and Chandler Fletcher (2).

Hardee and Murry each hit 3-pointers.

Brook Hill plays host to the Tyler HEAT at 8 p.m. Tuesday, while Gorman visits Tyler Grace Community on Friday.

Sabine 62, Gladewater 34

LIBERTY CITY — Mikinzi Cantrell hit for 25 points, of which 23 were in the first half, as the Sabine Lady Cardinals stayed unbeaten in district with a 62-34 win over Gladewater on Monday.

Others scoring for Sabine (14-7, 5-0 District 16-3A) were Halyn McKenzie (10), Blaire Kaufman (7), Mercedes Willett (7), Maddie Furrh (6), Mallory Furrh (5) and Hailey Davis (2).

Sabine plays host to Winona at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, while White Oak visits Gladewater for a 6:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.

Hawkins 43, Overton 28

OVERTON — The Hawkins Lady Hawks won their fifth straight game, a 42-28 victory over Overton on Monday in a District 16-2A girls basketball game.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but moved to Monday due to weather concerns.

Jordyn Warren and Logan Jaco led the Lady Hawks in scoring with, 12 and 11 points, respectively. Warren added five rebounds and six steals. Jaco had three rebounds and three steals.

Others contributing to the Hawkins win were Lynli Dacus (7 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals), Makena Warren (4 points, 2 rebounds), Tenley Conde (4 points, 2 assists, 3 steals), Victoria Miller (3 points) and Maraina Clark (2 points, 7 rebounds).

Hawkins (20-1, 3-1) returns to play on Tuesday, hosting Big Sandy. JV action is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Overton is scheduled to visit Big Sandy on Friday.
