ARP — Tyler Stewart rushed for 101 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Arp Tigers defeated the Hughes Springs Mustangs 42-20 on Thursday at Herrington Stadium.
Arp improves to 1-1 on the season, while the Mustangs fall to 1-1.
The Tigers' rushing attack was also paced by Tray Baker (7 carries, 84 yards, TD) and Kayce Medlock (8 carries, 73 yards, TD).
Medlock was also stellar on defense, returning a fumble 73 yards for a touchdown and intercepting a pass at the goal line to thwart a Hughes Springs drive in the fourth quarter.
The two squads were tied 6-6 after the first quarter.
Stewart got the Tigers on the board first, jetting 12 yards for a TD. The kick failed and Arp led 6-0 with 5:35 showing.
Hughes Springs bounced back as QB Alex Bruce hit Dedrick Hill on a 34-yard TD pass. The PAT failed and the clubs were tied at 6-6 with 2:34 to go in the first quarter.
Arp went up 20-6 in the second quarter as Stewart bolted to the end zone on a 36-yard tally. The pass for two failed and the Tigers were ahead 12-6 with 7:56 showing.
Medlock then found pay dirt on a 2-yard dash. Stewart ran in the two-point conversion and Arp led 20-6.
However the Mustangs pulled within 20-14 at halftime as Hughes Springs got an untimed down as the quarter came to an end. The Ponies took advantage of the extra play due to the penalty and Bo McEntire scored from two-yards out. Bruce passed to Ty Menefee for two points.
Arp broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 22-6.
The Tigers scored the first two TDs of the period as Baker was off and running for a 65-yard run with 11:36 showing. Stewart hit Jacoby Hawkins for the two-point conversion and Arp led 28-14.
Arp got another big run as Skyler Hotaling ran 42-yards for a TD. Ford Merritt booted the PAT and the Tigers were up 35-14 with 7:55 showing.
But the Mustangs got right back into the contest just 15 seconds later as Tadarian Craver returned the kickoff 81 yards for a TD. The run for two failed, but HS was within 35-20.
Hughes Springs was trying to pull within a TD, but Medlock scooped up a fumble and returned it 73 yards for a TD with 4:46 showing in the third period. Merritt's PAT made the final score 42-20 as neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
McEntire led the Mustangs with 46 yards and a TD on 14 attempts.
Bruce was 8 of 19 for 83 yards and a TD.
Both teams return to action on Sept. 9 with Arp traveling to Alto and Hughes Springs playing host to Omaha Paul Pewitt. Both games have 7:30 p.m. kickoffs.
