When asked what he remembers from the 2007 state quarterfinals, Arp coach Dale Irwin quickly provides an answer.
"Nothing," he said, referring to a crushing defeat the Tigers experienced against Elysian Fields caused by a Hail Mary with no time remaining.
Tonight, Arp (9-2) and Elysian Field (9-3) meet in the postseason once again in the Class 2A Division II regional playoffs at 7:30 p.m. at Carthage's Bulldog Stadium.
And just like 2007, it will be the second matchup between the teams in one season. The Tigers beat Elysian Fields this season 43-13 in non-district, but fell 34-7 in 2007 in a district matchup.
Arp has been at least three rounds deep in the playoffs in six consecutive seasons.
"Our kids just expect to be playing now," Irwin said. "If we are not, then we are disappointed. We just hope that one of these times we can get through the quarterfinals."
The winner between Arp and Elysian Fields will advance to the state quarterfinals and take on either Hughes Springs (11-0) or Centerville (11-0), who meet at 7:30 p.m. today in Whitehouse.
Several other matchups that feature East Texas teams will be on tap tonight, including a showdown between Daingerfield (9-3) and Winnsboro (8-3) in 2A Division II at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. The game is a rematch from a playoff game last season, during which Daingerfield rolled to a 46-19 victory.
The winner between the teams will face either Pottsboro (11-0) or New Boston (11-0) in the state quarterfinals.
Tonight's other area games include Alto (10-2) vs. Bosqueville (11-1) in 1A Division I in Buffalo and Mount Enterprise (9-3) vs. Frost (11-1) in 1A Division II in Teague.
The winner between Alto and Bosqueville will advance to play either San Augustine (9-2) or Mart (9-2) in the state quarterfinals, while the Mount Enterprise-Frost winner will continue its season against either Bremond (9-3) or Tenaha (7-4).
