CARTHAGE — A dominating run game by Alto earned the Yellowjackets a 34-14 win over Simms Bowie on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
Alto rushed for 300 yards on 36 carries in the Class 1A Division I bi-district victory.
The Yellowjackets received the ball to start the game, and on the first play from scrimmage Bodrick Gasaway ran 48 yards for a touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.
Simms Bowie, however, answered with a touchdown on its first possession of the game. Bradley Crumpton capped off an eight-play drive with a 27-yard score to tie the game at seven.
The teams traded punts following the Pirates’ touchdown, and on his second carry of the game, Gasaway took the ball 44 yards to regain a lead the Yellowjackets would never relinquish.
Alto forced Simms Bowie to punt on the next possession. The Yellowjackets scored six plays later on a 36-yard run by Jacolby Whitaker.
Later in the second quarter, Alto’s Datrin Moore forced and recovered a fumble at the Pirates’ 41. The turnover set up the Yellowjackets for a nine-play drive that resulted in a 13-yard touchdown by Gasaway on a reverse.
Gasaway led Alto with 154 yards rushing and three scores on the ground. Whitaker followed with 104 yards rushing and 38 passing.
Alto advances to the area round against Lovelady next weekend. Lovelady, the District 11-1A, Division I champion, received a first round bye.
