Former University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Bishop Gorman basketball coach Larry Hargett is bringing a new kind of basketball camp to East Texas.
The Backcourt Basketball School, which teaches basketball players to beat their opponent off the dribble as well as defend, is scheduled for July 10 to 12 at All Saints Episcopal School.
“We wanted to bring a quality and affordable camp to East Texas,” Hargett said. “Parents don’t have to drive to the Metroplex, Houston or San Antonio for their kids to participant in a camp like this.”
The camp is conducted by Hargett and Bill Winfrey, who was Hargett’s point guard at UNC-Greensboro.
The camp is for boys and girls seventh grade through high school.
The cost is $395. The camp is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
“Beating better athletes requires superior court savvy and skills,” Hargett said. “Developing key perimeter skills helps any player and takes both hard and smart work.”
Winfrey coached with Point Guard College director Dick DeVenzio (former Duke point guard) for several years before deciding to open a camp of his own.
At the camp, athletes will learn 13 skills essential to play above their athleticism level. Player notebooks will be provided while video analysis and skill assessments will be conducted.
Each attendee will receive individual development plans designed to help gain a step of quickness through improved technique and knowledge. The camp will include classroom chalk talks.
Hargett said about 20 players have signed up. Players are from Tyler, Slocum, Wills Point, Canton, Brownsboro, Quitman, Mount Pleasant and other East Texas areas.
Players leave with a player notebook, T-shirt and personal development plan.
Hargett was inducted into the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Hall of Fame in 2003 after coaching the team from 1978-1981 where he guided the squad to its first NCAA tournament appearance.
Hargett was the Texas High School Coach of the Year in 1978 and he led Houston Strake Jesuit to back-to-back state titles in 1976-77. He later led Cypress Fairbanks to a state semifinals berth in 1978. Hargett led UNC-Greensboro to its first NCAA playoff berth and later was an assistant coach at Baylor.
In 2009, he was named the All-East Texas Coach of the Year for leading the Bishop Gorman girls to the state tournament.
