GLADEWATER - Behind a punishing ground game, Gladewater remained unbeaten in 2016 with a 30-0 homecoming shutout of Chapel Hill Friday night at Jack V. Murphy-Bear Stadium.
Darnell McKnight led the way for the Bears with 112 yards rushing and one touchdown, while Isaiah Davis scored twice behind 76 yards. Quarterback Cameron Callaway ran for 93 yards with one rushing score. Gladewater also picked up a safety.
On defense, Austin Hawley totaled two sacks and had an interception. Isaiah Tiner also posted a pair of sacks for the Bears. Chapel Hill lost starting quarterback Jaxon Heckle midway through the third quarter and had to finish with Billy Maddox.
The Bears dominated the first half en route to a 21-0 advantage. A pair of rushing touchdowns by Davis and another from Callaway were the difference in the opening two stanzas. The trio combined for 196 yards on the ground.
Chapel Hill finished the first half with minus-15 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs' only positive yards came on an 11-yard pass completion. They were limited to 14 total plays. The only first down was the result of a Gladewater penalty.
