John Tyler has some tall receivers.

Guys like Damion Miller (6-2), Jaivon Williams (6-2) and Ke'Andre Street (6-4) have combined for 16 receptions this year.

But the Lions' top pass catcher through three games is Michael Givens-Washington, a 5-7, 165-pound junior who leads the team with 12 receptions, nearly 30 percent of all passes caught from quarterback Bryson Smith.

Givens-Washington, with his ability both making catches and returning kicks, has taken over the role filled the last few years by Duntayviun Gross, who's now at Cisco College.

Gross, at 5-8, may not have been the largest of players, but he left large hole to fill after graduating with 155 catches for 1,978 yards over three seasons.

"I had to fill some big shoes because DunDun was always the go-to guy to make something happen," Givens-Washington said. "I just had to fill in his shoes."

Givens-Washington has 147 receiving yards, already passing his mark of 124 yards on 12 catches last season. He came on strong as a sophomore with at least one catch in the final seven games while finishing second behind Gross in kick return yardage.

This year Givens-Washington is the team's primary punt returning, averaging 20 yards on five returns, one going as long as 55 yards.

"Versatility, a playmaker, explosiveness, he's a quick kid, has deceptive speed and great hands," JT coach Ricklan Holmes said describing Givens-Washington. "And then he brings another aspect to the return game because he knows what to do with the ball in his hands and we've just got to make sure he gets it."

Givens-Washington didn't have a receiving touchdown last year, though he ran for one. This year he already has two scoring receptions - evading three tacklers on each.

In Saturday's win over New Orleans Warren Easton, he bobbled a short pass, cut around his initial defender then split two more defenders for an 18-yard touchdown.

As John Tyler prepares to open District 11-6A play against Rockwall at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium on Friday, Givens-Washing has his eyes on a special teams touchdown.

"Man I want one bad," Givens-Washington said. "Hopefully it's coming soon. I'm trying hard. I'm trying to get better every day in practice."

Holmes said Givens-Washington has put the work in during the offseason and 7-on-7 in the summer to help transform himself into one of the Lions' top receivers this year.

"He worked really hard, way harder than he did last year being a first-year player as a sophomore," Holmes said. "I think his understanding of the game has become a little bit more in depth than it was last year."

Givens-Washington isn't the only sub-6-foot receiver on the field for JT, with sophomore Devlen Woods second on the team with nine receptions. Miller leads the team in yardage with 307 thanks to three touchdowns of 76 yards or more.

But Givens-Washington prides himself on always being there to bail out Smith at quarterback.

"He's the reason we do what we do," Givens-Washington said. "We played football all our lives together. We played little league together.

"We know what to do, when to do it and how to do it."
