It was a mixed bag for East Texas on Day 1 of the 7-on-7 state tournament Thursday in College Station.

Division II was in action, and three area teams did enough in pool play to reach the championship bracket. Reigning 4A Division II champion Gilmer finished second in Pool L to advance with Chapel Hill winning Pool M. Also going into Friday's championship bracket play is Carthage, which finished second in Pool O.

The Division II single-elimination championship bracket is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex. The single-elimination consolation bracket starts an hour earlier at 8 a.m.

Pittsburg was cruelly denied an opportunity to be in the championship bracket.

The Pirates, playing in Pool F, finished in a three-way tie for first at 2-1. All three had beaten Van Horn, meaning the first tiebreaker was total points. Pittsburg racked up 105 in its three games, but Gatesville edged the Pirates and Hamshire-Fannett with its 114 total.

With one spot remaining, it now came down to a head-to-head between Pittsburg and Hamshire-Fannett. Hamshire-Fannett had defeated the Pirates by one point, 34-33, and that was the difference. Pittsburg goes into the consolation bracket, along with White Oak (finished third in Pool A at 1-2) and Canton (finished third in Pool C at 1-2).

Chapel Hill faces off against Hamshire-Fannett. The Bulldogs navigated pool play, posting victories over Albany (31-13) and Lutheran South (36-33) before being denied by one point to Giddings (47-46) for its second-place finish.

Gilmer squares off against Houston Worthing. The Buckeyes posted wins in their first two pool play games (47-21 over Bandera and 48-47 over West), but were denied by one point in a 33-32 loss to Snyder. Worthing rolled through its pool, winning each game by an average of 15 points.

Carthage takes on Kountze. The Bulldogs split their first two pool play games (beat Brownwood 27-14, but lost to Taylor 48-33) before rebounding to edge La Feria (48-46) to earn their spot. Kountze went undefeated in pool play, thanks to a stingy defense that allowed just 23 points per game.

The championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

In the consolation bracket: White Oak opens up against Groesbeck, Canton faces Diboll and Pittsburg takes on Giddings. The consolation championship is at 2:30 p.m.

Division I Gets Going

Robert E. Lee, Lindale and Lufkin begin Division I pool play on Friday afternoon. Games are scheduled for 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex.

The Red Raiders are grouped with San Antonio Alamo Heights, Houston Lamar and Lucas Lovejoy in Pool L.

Lindale is in Pool N, which is comprised of Trophy club Byron Nelson, Mesquite Horn and Manvel.

Pool M features Lufkin against Pearland Dawson, Laredo United and Waxahachie.

Just like in Division II, the top two finishers in each pool advance to the championship bracket with the bottom two going into the consolation bracket.
