ATHENS – Fairfield jumped out to a 14-0 lead early against Athens. The Hornets came back to take the lead, but were ultimately stung Friday, 27-24, at Bruce Field.
Fairfield handed Athens its first loss of the year with a touchdown at 4:24 remaining in regulation.
The Hornets (1-1) scored 16 unanswered points to take a 16-14 lead at the half. Athens had 106 yards of total offense at the half with touchdowns from Jerquindon Taylor and Xavius Fulton.
In the end, Fairfield scored the game-winning touchdown on a five-yard run by Kadarrius Walker.
On the two-point conversion, Athens cornerback Rhejhi Sherfield scooped up a fumble, and raced to the end zone for the 27-24 finale.
The Hornets will look to get back in the win column Friday on the road at Red Oak.
