ROUND ROCK — Travis Cockerham singled past a diving Brian Johnson in the top of the 13th to lift Jarrell to a 3-2 victory over Elkhart in the Class 2A state baseball semifinals Wednesday night at Dell Diamond.

The Cougars (26-4) face Bushland in the championship game at noon today.

Bushland (31-6-1) beat top-ranked Brock (33-2) in the first 2A semifinals of the day, 1-0, in another extra-inning game. Bushland won in eight innings.

Elkhart’s Cole Bridges forced extra innings with an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. Neither team could get runners across until the 13th inning.

The Elks stranded the game-tying run at third base in the botton of the 13th.

Elkhart ended its season 36-5 and ranked No. 3 by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.

The Elks were making their first appearance in the state tournament since 1992 and their fourth in program history.

They made back-to-back appearances in 1991-92.

Elkhart lost in the semifinals in each of the previous three trips.

Elkhart beat Nacogdoches Central Heights in three games in the regional finals to advance to state.

Jarrell entered the game rated eighth by the THSBCA.

The Cougars’ only other appearance at state came in 2004.

Jarrell punched a ticket in three games over Hallettsville.
