The Corsicana Tigers used three pitchers to hold John Tyler to a two-hitter and take a 10-0 win over the Lions in the District 16-4A opener Tuesday night at Mike Carter Field.
The Tigers took advantage of two walks and two JT (2-12, 0-1) errors to open up a 3-0 lead after the Tigers' first at-bat. Corsicana (14-4, 1-0) put up four runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to build the 10-0 cushion.
"We have just got to get better mentally with game situations and we have got to back our pitchers up," JT coach Chuck Isaac said. "That first inning we had two errors that gave up the runs and you can't dig a hole against a good baseball team like Corsicana is."
Sophomore, L.D. Johnson took the loss on the mound for JT, striking out one, walking four and yielding seven Tigers hits. Josh Parker, a freshman starting third baseman, came on in relief in the fourth inning for JT and struck out three and walked three in his two inning stint to finish the game.
Johnson and Andre Crawford had one hit each to account for the Lions offense.
"We are still better than we were last year and I was really proud of our young players tonight," Isaac said. "Our starter, L.D. Johnson, is a just sophomore and like all the rest, needs to work on the mental aspects and the mental preparation before the game.
"Our freshman Josh Parker came in and threw two quality innings to close out the game, so we will keep working on the fundamentals and get ready for the rest of district."
In the first, a walk followed by two straight JT miscues put runners at the corners. The Tigers then pulled off a double steal, plating the first Tigers run of the game. The Lions got an out before Tigers catcher Trevor Nolen busted a two-RBI double for the 3-0 advantage.
Nolen paced the Tigers with four RBIs, including two sacrifice flies. Leadoff batter Layton Wolver walked four times and scored twice while the No. 2 batter, Brady Harlan, was 1 for 3, with one RBI and three runs scored.
John Tyler will next play Lindale at Mike Carter Field at 7 p.m. Friday. Corsicana will host Nacogdoches on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
